Energy Update [June 22, 2026] — Consumers Avert Projected Electricity Tariff Hike

Islamabad — Millions of electricity consumers across Pakistan have managed to avoid a highly anticipated surge in utility costs. Initial mid-quarter projections by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) had signaled a looming price hike of Rs. 5 to Rs. 6 per unit, triggered by sudden shortages of Imported Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) and a temporary reliance on expensive furnace oil.

However, aggressive fuel-mix management and strategic system adjustments by the Ministry of Energy successfully absorbed the shock. Instead of a price increase, the government has finalized a small, marginal relief of up to 20 paisas per unit for the current billing cycle, entirely stabilizing the national average tariff.

June 2026 Electricity Tariff Adjustment

~ Initial Projected Hike: Rs. +5.00 to +6.00 per unit

~Actual June 2026 Adjustment: Rs. -0.20 per unit (Relief)

~Net Consumer Impact: Fully Stabilized / No Tariff Increase

Behind the Stabilization

The stabilization follows structural gains achieved in the first quarter of the year, which generated roughly Rs. 65 billion in savings from improved power demand management and a reduction in line losses. Ministry officials stated that the combination of these quarterly savings and optimized transmission planning completely offset the high generation costs incurred during recent peak summer loads.
